Mountaineering - Humboldt and Bolivar peaks

Located inside Sierra Nevada National Park in Merida State, Bolivar Peak (4986 m) and Humboldt Peak (4942 m) are the highest mountains in Venezuelan territory. Both peaks represent a great challenge for climbing enthusiasts, involving expert technical preparation to reach the summits.

Hiking to Humboldt Peak, the excursionist will have the opportunity to walk on the only glacier existent in Sierra Nevada, and will enjoy the fauna and the transition of different types of vegetation, which changes from the Mucuy Park until the peak summit.

The trip ends with the ascent of Bolivar Peak, which is climbed using the Weiss Route, which consists of a narrow gully that proceeds until the main ridge of Bolivar Peak, and then until the desired summit.

Requirements:

• Be at least 15 years old. In case of being a minor, the parents or legal guardian must authorize the activity.
• We recommend previous experience in mountaineering, but it is not a limitation.

Duration: 8 days and 7 nights.

Schedule: We can offer the trip any date you wish, as long as it has at least three participants (subject to our availability). Also, you can view our activities calendar.

Capacity: From 3 to 6 persons.

Itinerary:

• Day 1 - Departure from Merida to The Mucuy Park. The hike goes from The Mucuy until La Coromoto Lagoon.
• Day 2 – Hike: La Coromoto Lagoon to Green Lake.
• Day 3 – Hike: Climb to the Humboldt Summit – Green Lake
• Day 4 – Rest-day: Visit to the Suero Lagoon.
• Day 5 – Hike: Green Lake to The Timoncitos.
• Day 6 – Hike: Climb to the summit of Bolivar Peak – The Timoncitos.
• Day 7 – The Timoncitos to Los Calderones Valley.
• Day 8 – Los Calderones Valley to Mucunutan, and from Mucunutan to Merida.

It offers:

• All meals on the mountain.
• Common camping equipment (tents and stoves).
• Climbing equipment (ropes, helmets, harnesses, etc.)
• 4WD transportation from Merida – The Mucuy and Mucunutan– Merida.
• Specialized mountain guide.
• First aid kit. 
• A pre-trip meeting to fine-tune logistical details.

Basic mountain equipment needed (per participant):

• Hiking – travel backpack, with at least 45 liters of capacity.
• Hiking boots in good condition.
• Sleeping bag (at least 0 ºC).
• Camping mat.
• Waterproof jacket.
• Warm clothes.

Transportation:

Participants can arrange their own transportation to and from Merida City, or they can hire our transportation service.
